The Blue Lagoon is a strip of shallow, glass-clear water between Comino and the tiny islet of Cominotto. It is Malta’s most famous swimming spot, and in summer it now runs on a free booking system. Here is how to book, how to get there and when to go.

Do You Need to Book the Blue Lagoon?
Yes, in summer. Since 2025 the Malta Tourism Authority has run a free booking system, and it is in force again for 2026. Everyone landing at the Blue Lagoon needs a pass, whether you arrive by ferry, tour boat or private boat.
- Book a free pass at bluelagooncomino.mt, or at one of the information booths in Sliema, Buġibba, Mellieħa, Ċirkewwa, Marfa and Mġarr.
- Pick a time slot: 08:00 to 13:00, 13:30 to 17:30 or 18:00 to 22:00.
- You get a QR code by email.
- Swap the QR code for a wristband at the entry point when you land.
Good to know: each slot is capped at 4,000 visitors. Don’t assume your boat ticket includes the pass. Ask the operator, and get it in writing. Rules were checked in July 2026 and can change, so check the official site before you go.
How to Get to the Blue Lagoon
- Mġarr, Gozo: about 15 min
- Ċirkewwa or Marfa: about 20 min
- Buġibba: about 1 hour
- Sliema: day cruises, often with Gozo or the caves
From Ċirkewwa and Marfa
The quickest and cheapest way. Small ferries cross in about 20 minutes and run about every 30 minutes in season. 2026 listings put a return ticket at around €15 for adults.
From Gozo (Mġarr)
If you are staying on Gozo, boats from Mġarr harbour reach Comino in about 15 minutes.
From Sliema and Buġibba
Day cruises leave from both. From Buġibba the trip takes about an hour. Many cruises combine the Blue Lagoon with Gozo or the sea caves, so they cost more than the ferry but save you getting to Ċirkewwa.

Things to Do on Comino

- Crystal Lagoon: a quieter cove with sea caves, usually seen from a boat.
- St Mary’s Tower: a watchtower built by the Knights of St John in 1618, a short walk from the lagoon.
- Santa Marija Bay: a small sandy bay on the north side of the island.
Blue Lagoon Tips
- Bring water and shade. There is little natural shade near the lagoon.
- Pack swim shoes. Much of the shore is rock.
- Take your rubbish back with you.
- Carry some cash for the kiosks and boats.
